About

Slow, plain-spoken therapy for autistic adults

I'm Troy Rowland, a licensed professional counselor in Oregon. My practice is one person and one room in Portland, with video for clients in Oregon, where I am licensed.

I see autistic adults, many of whom were diagnosed, or began to suspect it, in their thirties, forties or later. I'm not here to diagnose you or to fix you. I'm here to listen, to be direct, and to help you work out what you need.

I keep the practice small so I can keep it quiet: one client at a time, a warm lamp, a chair that doesn't swivel, and nothing that surprises you. Outside the room, you'll find me on the river trail with a thermos, reading about birds, or fixing my bike.

  • Plain words

Direct language, with no hints to decode.

  • Your pace

Pauses, silence and "I don't know yet" are all welcome.

  • Sensory choices

Light, sound and seating are yours to adjust.

  • Privacy

I keep your records private and share them only as the law allows.

What I believe

Three ideas that shape how I work.

  • Autism isn't a flaw

I take your way of seeing and sensing as a difference to understand, not a problem to smooth out.

  • Nothing is a test

Questions are fine, silence is fine, and so is saying "not today."

  • You know your needs

My job is to help you find words for them, and to help you ask for what helps.

How I work

How sessions run

The same shape each time, so you always know where we are.

  1. 01

Step 1: An agenda in writing

You get it before the session. We can change it together, in the room or on the call.

  2. 02

    Step 2: Plain language

I say what I mean and I ask when I'm not sure what you mean. No hints to decode.

  3. 03

Step 3: Choices about the room

Light, sound, seating, camera and where to look are yours to set, and to change halfway.

  4. 04

Step 4: A summary if you want one

A few written lines after the session on what we covered, so you don't have to hold it all in your head.
